Not at all..!! It’s always healthy to feed a dog-”diet food” !

No, it is not less healthy and does not lack nutrients. Diet pet foods have the same nutritional value as far as vitamins and such as their regular counterparts. They usually do, however, contain more products that produce that full feeling without the extra calories or fat.
No, it won’t harm her and she isn’t being deprived of any vital nutrients. If you are that concerned you can contact your vet and discuss it with them. That should ease any concerns you have.
**there are many different brands of quality pet food out now a days. Many people on here get upset when they feel people feed a less than desirable food to their pets. Diet food contains extra fillers to ‘plump’ it up, making the dog feel full on less nutrients.

Rather than feeding kibble that can be ‘hoovered’ up in seconds why not switch to raw meaty bones on alternate days (for a start anyway )? A chicken quarter or meaty shoulder roast will not only take much longer to eat, leaving your dog more satisfied, it will clean her teeth and gums too.

I don’t think it is unhealthy for her, or lacking in nutrients, but is made up of more grain fillers. As we all know dogs should eat meat which is protein. Just feed her a little less high protein dog food or whatever you feed the others, don’t leave food down for her at all times (lots water though) and it sounds like she is active so she should burn off her calorie intake. When she looks at you with those big eyes and you think she needs more food, stop yourself and get the ball out and play fetch…she will love you for it!!

Most breeders I know recomend never using diet dog food because it lacks too many nutrients. Put her on less of a better quality dog food and add some canned pumpkin, or green beans as filler until she gets used to eating less. Feed her baby carrots and apple slices for treats. A healthy, well exercised dog doesn’t gain weight on the proper amount of food.

I would take her to the vet for a blood TSH test. Excessive weight gain is not a normal thing. Its often a sign of the doggy version of hypothyroidism. Feeding diet foods may aggravate whatever it is thats causing the weight gain. Find a low grain food like evo or wellness and stick to that, but definitely see a vet first.

Why won’t you just feed *LESS* of the regular???
“Diet” feeds are just full of expensive fillers.

You should find her a good quality low fat food.. Those lower quality foods tend to make them fat, cause they have to eat more to get their nutrition.. Good quality kibble costs more but they eat far less…

Diet food is low calorie, meaning it’s less nutritious than regular food. So yes, you’re basically feeding a food with all kinds of fillers, and less of healthy good stuff for your dog.

I recommend feeding a higher quality “non-diet” food, in smaller portions. Multiple feedings through the day work better than one big meal. Also you can give a few raw veggies (carrots etc), and/or canned pumpkin (unspiced, just plain raw canned pumpkin) as a more healthy, and fiber filled snack.

Diet dog food usually has more grains than good quality regular food. Put her back on regular food and just feed her less. That’s how I got 6 lbs off my Husky mix. Sometimes dogs don’t need as much as the guide on the bag says. Don’t worry if you have to feed her less.
